Each student gets to choose a tree that they want to follow for three years. Once they have chosen their tree, they follow the trees through all the seasons of the year and learn about the tree species to which the tree belongs. Through this work, students gain a feeling for nature and respect for it. By staying with "their tree" and sometimes having to sit there to do their schoolwork, the students find peace and an interaction with nature.
